Welcome to Acclaim Magazine’s Heat of the Week for February 9, 2024. Here are our favourite new releases from Australia and around the world this week — Follow our playlist here for updates of the best new music every single Friday.

01. Until We’re All Free - Various Artists

Until We’re All Free‘ is an important piece of art. Some of the scene’s best have come together in solidarity, taking a stance against the genocide currently happening in Palestine. The artists here represent a united front of creatives from Palestinian, Arab, First Nations, and other diverse backgrounds, with each individual contributing an unrelenting passion to their portions. The importance of this song reaches far further than any discussions about production or performances, but for what it’s worth, it also absolutely slaps. ‘Until We’re All Free’ is quality, meets courage.

02. Shanae - outside

‘Outside’ finds Sydney’s Shanae continuing to perfect her unique R&B sound. Spacey, deep-house synths float to the thumping kicks of Jersey club drums. The singer’s voice is rich with personality, as you can hear the rasp in her voice as she vehemently hits every note. It’s simultaneously laid-back and dance-ready, speaking to what makes Shanae a truly special prospect.

03. Church & AP - WTF

The first line you hear on this new Church & AP song is ‘I rock Salvation Army fits’, which is funny, because when it comes to their music, nothing is recycled. ‘WTF’ is another example of this duo’s versatility, bringing their blood-pumping rap styles to a series of dissonant chords and synths. Church & AP are doing it different and we’re here for it every damn time.

04. 3% - Sleazy Steezy Cool ft. Tia Gostelow

It’s not hard to imagine this new 3% song dominating the radio for the next few months. The thumping drums and massive synths of the instrumental are blood-pumping. Tia Gostelow’s soft singing on the hook is bound to get stuck in your head. And of course, Nooky, Dallas Woods, and Angus Field come through with their signature swagger on the verses, making this a dose of pop-rap that’s worthy of arenas.

05. Erika De Casier - ice ft. They Hate Change

‘ice’ is a sensual dose of R&B. The drums gyrate throughout the mix, with dreamy synths creating a euphoric atmosphere. Erika De Casier’s voice is on point as usual, delivering a satisfying howl throughout her vocal lines. Unexpectedly, They Hate Change fit in perfectly too, cutting through the cloudiness with sleek bars.

06. boler mani - silence

This new boler mani track does the opposite of what the title implies, as it wastes no time exploding through the speakers. Vibrating 808s and siren-like synths swarm throughout, with the Melbourne rapper keeping up, switching between flows and vocal inflections in a series of impressive combos. It’s one to start a moshpit to.

07. Chanel Loren - Carelessly Doomed ft. Kota the Friend

This new Chanel Loren track is perfect for Summer weather; Sun-soaked guitar strums through the mix. Chanel’s passion beams with every melody. Kota The Friend’s feature acts as a cool breeze, smoothly weaved into the atmosphere. It’s a refreshing switch-up from Loren, and it’s bound to brighten your day.

08. Teether - Elbow Grease

This one is for all my weird rap enthusiasts out there. ‘Elbow Grease’ finds Teether continuing to excel in his peculiar approach to spitting these bars. The reverb on his delivery creates an echo effect, chaotically floating over a vibrant soul sample. It’s like a weighted blanket: jarring at first, before becoming undeniably comforting. It appears on Teether’s new album It Must Be Strange to Not Have Lived, which you can stream now.

09. Little Simz - Mood Swings

‘Mood Swings’ is another dose of blockbuster hip-hop from Little Simz. The base of this track lies within the percussion, with rattles and blasts throughout the quick-hitting 2-and-a-half-minute runtime. This pandemonium is no challenge for Simz, as she urgently unleashes barrages upon barrages of lyricism throughout. It’s a high-octane way to start her new EP Drop 7, which you can stream now.

010. Darcy Baylis - I Wanna Be Tranquilized

‘I feel like I’m freaking floating when I put on this new Darcy Baylis track. The production combines the ambience of a Clams Casino beat, with the sombre guitar strums you’d hear on a Mount Eerie album. Darcy is at his very best vocally, hitting that midwest emo-esque strain as per usual, but also tapping into new emotional heights with a passionate falsetto. He’s been a mainstay in the underground scene for a while now, but the man keeps getting better.
